This is a breakdown of what people believe about artificial intelligence in 2026: where each claim came from, what evidence actually exists, and why it spread. It’s an analysis of the claims, not an endorsement of them.
We start at the surface with engagement-optimized recommendation algorithms and the theory that chatbots are being deliberately nerfed. Then down through the AI slop economy and dead internet theory, platforms seeding synthetic users, the argument that you trained your own replacement, model sandbagging, “AGI has already been achieved internally,” synthetic history, AI-mediated religion, Roko’s Basilisk, the Waluigi effect, and finally the case that artificial intelligence is the Great Filter.
