Inside the Rothschild Surrealist Ball That Felt Like a Dream World #rothschild #history #surreal

In 1972, a private Surrealist Ball was held at Château de Ferrières near Paris, hosted by Baroness Marie Hélène de Rothschild. Even the invitation was designed to match the surreal theme. It was written backward and had to be read using a mirror, turning a simple invite into a strange visual puzzle before guests even arrived.

Inside the château, the design felt like a dream world. The building was floodlit to look like it was burning, while servants dressed as sleeping cats greeted guests at the entrance. Guests then passed through a lace and ribbon maze before reaching dining rooms filled with surreal displays, including pink and blue cloud patterned tablecloths, fur covered plates, broken baby dolls, taxidermied tortoises, and unusual artistic centerpieces inspired by surrealist art.
