Persistent contrails may account for roughly one-third of aviation’s total climate impact. Operation Blue Skies is testing whether AI-guided altitude adjustments can help aircraft avoid atmospheric conditions that favour persistent contrails.
The UK trial focuses on Shanwick Oceanic airspace, which represents about 5% of global contrail warming. But avoiding contrails can require additional fuel and CO₂ emissions.
The key question: can targeted altitude changes produce a measurable net climate benefit at airspace scale?
