At the UN climate negotiations SB64 in Bonn, civil society organizations, grassroots movements, and climate justice campaigners from across Africa, Asia, and Latin America came together to reiterate the rejection of risky and speculative geoengineering technologies as a false solution and dangerous distraction from real climate action.
They exposed how geoengineering is being advanced through climate policy spaces, particularly via Article 6 which gives entry to carbon markets.
Speakers will highlighted how these technologies are being positioned in the Global South as a “climate solution,” while in reality they deepen inequality and risks to ecosystems and communities.
Panelists drew attention to the colonial dimensions of geoengineering showing how these approaches reproduce historical patterns of exploitation, turning lands, waters, and skies in the Global South into sites for experimentation and control.
