What if humanity’s answer to climate change wasn’t cutting emissions, but dimming the sun itself? It sounds reckless, but companies are already doing it, right now, with almost no regulation stopping them.
This controversial idea is called solar geoengineering, and the most talked-about version is stratospheric aerosol injection, mimicking what happens after massive volcanic eruptions when sulfur particles temporarily cool the planet. Enter Make Sunsets, a California startup launching weather balloons filled with sulfur dioxide, selling “cooling credits” for under ten dollars each.
After early test flights from Mexico triggered a government ban, the company simply relocated to the US, where regulation remains thin. Sulfur dioxide is a regulated pollutant under the Clean Air Act, and in April 2025 the EPA formally requested information about their activities. Meanwhile, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Florida have already banned solar geoengineering outright, with 34 more states considering similar bans.
Despite this pushback, funding for solar geoengineering research nearly tripled in 2025 alone. The United Nations has called for genuine international regulation, warning the technology remains largely untested and potentially harmful.
