The Atlantropa Project: Why Did They Want to Drain the Mediterranean Sea?

Imagine a world where the Mediterranean Sea no longer exists. Instead of azure waters, an endless, toxic salt desert stretches out, and a dead Venice looms ominously over a dry canyon. In the 1930s, Europe, trying to save itself from economic collapse, embarked on the insane ‘Atlantropa’ megaproject. By blocking the Strait of Gibraltar with a colossal dam, architects exposed the seabed, merged Europe and Africa into a single supercontinent, and obtained an endless source of cheap energy.

However, this monumental utopia quickly turned into an ecological hell. Radical interference with nature provoked devastating climate anomalies: southern Europe turned into a scorching oven, and Africa became a disenfranchised testing ground for cruel corporate experiments. Today, this dieselpunk world is strictly controlled by the almighty Energy Barons, for whom human life is merely a consumable resource to keep the giant turbines running.

But in the shadows of the concrete leviathan, a rebellion is brewing. A radical eco-terrorist group, the ‘Blue Front’, steals a nuclear warhead to blow up the Gibraltar Dam and return the ocean to its rightful place. Will they be able to wash away humanity’s sins with a cleansing megatsunami, or will the apocalyptic flood only destroy millions of innocent lives? Dive into this grim alternative history and discover the true price of human hubris.
