Solar geoengineering describes a set of proposals to increase the amount of light reflected by earth, and may offer a complementary means of reducing the risks of climate change. Solar geoengineering is not a substitute for emissions cuts but could it help reduce climate risks? There is no plan B for climate, but is it time to start thinking about plan A+?
In this talk, Dr. Irvine will cover the following topics:
– the current understanding of the effects of stratospheric aerosol geoengineering, the leading solar geoengineering proposal.
– an overview of the novel challenges and risks that solar geoengineering poses.
– the current and future governance challenges around the testing and development of solar geoengineering, and the challenges of incorporating it alongside other climate policies.
