Solar geoengineering feels new – but scientists have been here before. The idea dates back to 1965, when the first presidential report on climate change made the risks of fossil fuels impossible to ignore. Emissions reduction was shot down. So scientists started looking for other ways.
Six decades later, we know solar geoengineering can only treat the symptom, not the cause. It has to go hand-in-hand with cutting emissions.
