Martin Siegert and colleagues | Safeguarding the polar regions from dangerous geoengineering

In this Frontiers Forum Deep Dive session on 24 September, Prof Martin Siegert, Dr Valérie Masson-Delmotte, and Prof Steven Chown explored their Frontiers in Science lead article ‘Safeguarding the polar regions from dangerous geoengineering: a critical assessment of proposed and future prospects.’ They analyzed five of the most developed polar geoengineering approaches and their feasibility as a climate mitigation strategy.

The session brought together the article’s authors and expert panel members Sophie Crump from the Inuit Circumpolar Council, Greenland, and Prof Aarti Gupta from Wageningen University and Research. They discussed the technical feasibility, long-term costs, environmental risks, and governance limitations of these approaches.
